When building a new website or considering your next web design project, there are certain factors that you should keep in mind in order to help your website rank better in Search Engine Results Pages (SERP’s).  Fancy website design may look the business, but it might not help you get the business.

Websites that are unreadable, have little content or offer a poor user experience may be penalised by Google and result in a lowly ranked website against competitors who offer more.

Use these useful guides in order to create an SEO friendly website…

1. Well Constructed Website With An Easy Navigation

Easy navigation website designIf you have pages that are too deep and take more than 3 clicks to reach from the home page, then you are providing users a bad experience.  Try to make your content as easy to find as possible for Search Engine bots and users.  The 3 click rule s a good one to follow as it means your site navigation is a good one.  Consider making use of the following:

  • Breadcrumbs
  • Sitemap
  • Customised 404 pages
  • An accurate navigation or sub menus

2. Page Speed

Page speed for rankingsA hot talking point at the moment is the loading speed of your page.  We have all been there… we click on a link, it takes too long and so we go onto another result.  Googlebot does something very similar and so therefore slow loading pages will result in lost traffic and the risk of your content not being indexed by Google.

Want to find out the speed of your website?  Head over to the Google Page Speed test and see how you measure up.

Another really important factor to consider, is your page speed on mobile devices.  With an ever growing number of mobile users, mobile optimised experiences are an absolute must.

Mobile users could make up nearly 50% of your website traffic and therefore offer a key consideration in your design.

3. Conversion Optimisation And Call To Actions

Call to actionWondering why you have lots of traffic but no enquiries?  How easy is it for customers to contact you on your key landing pages?  Conversion optimisation is about creating enticing call to actions so that your customers feel they just have to contact you.  Make sure you have:

  • An easy to fill in enquiry form
  • A Google map with your company address included
  • Name, address and phone number and even an email address on every page

Try to use ‘power words’ that entice your users to click.  Eg. Get a free online quote now.  People love the word ‘free’!  Use something visual to capture the eye.

4. Building Your Online Brand Through Trust

Building trustGoogle wants its top search results to be trustworthy and so it has recently launched Google Authorship, a review score called Zagat and of course the much talked about Google +.

Google Authorship

You can link your profile picture in your Google + profile to your Google search results.  If you have written a blog article about Gluten Free Cooking for example, Google can display your blog post and your photo along with your recent article when people search for recipes on Gluten Free Cooking.  Market research shows that people are more likely to click the search result with a photo as it looks like a credible source.

Google Reviews

Using your Google + page, you can also ask customers to review your business and build your Zagat score.  If you saw a restaurant in the your search results, and it was rated 4.8 out of 5, you would be more inclined to visit it, or at the very least, visit the website!  You can also enhance the result using something called Schema Markup.

Google +

Google have their own version of Facebook and in the Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) world, your business can’t afford not to be there.  It allows you to achieve the above and is also a great place to publish and share your content, as your stuff will get indexed very quickly indeed. Almost immediately in some cases I have noticed.

Summary

And so, on that note, I am off to publish this artcile on the Smite SEO Google + page and hope for results.  Consider your site design very carefully in order to ensure that you don’t put too much emphasis on design over practicality.  Unless of course, you’re not too bothered about getting web visitors and customers 🙂
